Restoring Your Smile: The Benefits of Dental Bridges
Is a missing tooth robbing you of your confident smile? At Imprint Family Dentistry, we believe everyone deserves a smile they're proud of. Our experienced and compassionate dentist, Dr. Samuel Lee, is here to help you explore the benefits of dental bridges and how they can restore your smile.
What are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges, as the name suggests, bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. They are comprised of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.
Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants. They not only restore your smile but also your ability to properly chew and speak, maintain the shape of your face, and prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
Types of Dental Bridges
There are four main types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, Maryland, and implant-supported. The right one for you depends on the location of your missing tooth and the condition of your remaining teeth, gums, and jaw.
Dr. Samuel Lee will consider all these factors during your consultation to recommend the best type of dental bridge for your unique needs.
The Procedure of Getting Dental Bridges
Getting a dental bridge usually requires at least two visits to Imprint Family Dentistry. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared. Impressions of your teeth are taken, which serve as a model from which the bridge, pontic, and crowns will be made. You will receive a temporary bridge to protect your exposed teeth and gums while your bridge is being made.
During the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the new bridge is adjusted as necessary to achieve a proper fit. Multiple visits may be needed to check the fit of the metal framework and bite. This is dependent on each individual's case.
Caring for Your Dental Bridges
Dental bridges can last five to 15 years or even longer. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, it's not unusual for the life span of a fixed bridge to be over 10 years. It's important to floss under and around your bridge just like you would with your natural teeth. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing daily helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease that can lead to tooth loss.
Your regular dental checkup will also help prolong the life of your bridge. It's recommended that you see Dr. Samuel Lee at least once every six months for a checkup and professional cleaning.
